Native American Culture Presentations and Activities

Today as a part of our unit on cultures, all of the 1st graders at Hemlock Creek got to participate in three activities and presentations by Mrs. Karl and the Oneida Nation Museum. They got to make pinch pots with clay, make an Oneida clan mobile, and enjoyed listening to Oneida storytelling. They also learned some Oneida words and how to count to ten!

Comparing and Contrasting

This week we have been working on comparing and contrasting characters from different books. We started out by comparing and contrasting the main character from Chrysanthemum written by Kevin Henkes and the main character from Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse also written by Kevin Henkes. We found ways that these two characters were the same and how they were different.
Then, we read the books The Tale of the Three Little Pigs retold by Katherine Mead and the book The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs! as told by Jon Scieszka. We worked on comparing and contrasting the wolf that was present in each of these books.  The students did a fantastic job pointing out similarities and differences between these two books.

Human Body

We have been learning a lot about the Human Body during Science. So far we have learned about the following body systems: Respiratory System, Circulatory System, Muscular System, and Skeletal System, and the Nervous System.  We made "Brain Hats" to show the different parts of the brain.  This week we will be finishing up the Human Body Unit with the Digestive System.
