Blends and R-Controlled Vowels

We started a new phonics unit. During the next three weeks, we will be focusing on blends and r-controlled vowels. Blends are consonants that go together to make two separate sounds. For example, in the word "stop" the blend is the letters "s" and "t." We also learned about r-controlled vowels. We learned that if the letter "r" comes after a vowel, the vowel sound changes. We learned about -ar and -or this week. We made pirate hats in order to remember that when we see -ar in a word that we sound like a pirate!
