In science this year, students will be presented with various challenges. After a challenge is presented to the students, the students brainstorm a solution to solve the problem using certain materials. Their challenge this week was to work with a partner to create a shelf for their "elf" to sit on. Students could use paper cups, popsicle sticks, notecards, and tape. After this challenge, we discussed the importance of continuing to try your best even when their idea does not work as they expected. Many partners were able to persevere and were successful at some point in this activity.

Writing Unit: How To Books
This week we started our next unit in writing. We will be practicing writing How To Books. In order to gain a better understanding of this style of writing, the students helped me with the steps of making a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. We invited Mr. Kowalczyk in to make the peanut butter and jelly sandwich based solely on what the students decided were good steps. After Mr. K made his "sandwich" we revised our writing and added many more steps and we will be inviting Mr. K back into our classroom next week to see if he will be able to make a sandwich!
Check out pictures below of how Mr. K did with our first draft of "How to Make a Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwich"

Heritage Hill Field Trip 2017
On Friday, we learned a lot about what life was
like on a Belgian farm in 1905. We learned about immigration, homes,
making butter, farm life, summer kitchens, gardens, farm animals, and
much more! The kids were great listeners.
This field trip ties to our social studies unit on past and
present. Check out the some of the photos from our field trip!
